Does my Swype card expire?

Yes — and it can happen sooner than you'd expect if the card sits unused. Here's exactly how the timing works.

YOU'LL NEED

Nothing

Short answer: yes, every card has an expiration date. You can see exactly when yours expires in your dashboard, on the card details screen. Whichever comes first — the printed date or 90 days of no activity — is when it actually expires.

Two ways a card can expire

Your card expires at whichever of these two things happens first:

The printed date

Every card is valid for up to 3 years from issuance. That date is shown on the card itself and in your dashboard.

90 days of inactivity

If you don't use the card at all for 90 days straight, it expires early — even if the printed date is still years away.

Don't forget to activate it first

If you received an activation link, that's a separate clock: the link itself expires after 60 days if you never activate it. An unactivated card never even starts being usable — so activate it as soon as you get it, rather than saving it for later.

What happens to unused funds

This is the part worth paying attention to: if there's money left on the card when it expires, that balance is forfeited and becomes permanently unavailable. There's no grace period to claim it back afterward. If you have an active balance, the safest move is to spend it down or check your dashboard before the expiration date hits — or before you hit 90 days without using the card.

Important

You're responsible for using your card before it expires. If a balance is lost to inactivity, Swype isn't able to restore those funds afterward — so it's worth checking your expiration date in the dashboard now if you haven't used your card in a while.
