Card recharges

We've added 3D Secure (3DS) to the checkout flow when you refill your Reloadly Wallet with a bank card. This is the same standard most online merchants worldwide use at checkout to validate the cardholder's identity — typically by showing an authentication page from your own bank, asking you to enter a verification code sent to your phone or email.

The exact 3DS flow you see depends entirely on your card issuer, so it can look a little different from bank to bank. Here's what to expect.

1

The 3 types of cards

Not every card behaves the same way at checkout. Broadly, cards fall into three categories:

✅ Support 3DS

The card can use 3DS, but it's optional depending on the transaction.

➖ Do not support 3DS

The card simply can't go through a 3DS check at all.

🔒 Require 3DS

The issuing bank enforces 3DS on every transaction, no exceptions.

ℹ️ Good to know: fewer than 3% of cards worldwide fall into the "Require 3DS" category. For the vast majority of cardholders, this change is barely noticeable.
2

What this means for auto-recharge

Reloadly's Auto recharge feature keeps working normally for cards that support or don't support 3DS, since neither type forces an interactive verification step on every charge.

Important: if your card falls under "Require 3DS," your bank may enforce the 3DS checkout flow on every charge — including automatic ones. Since auto-recharge happens without you present to enter a code, this can cause those charges to fail.

If that's your case, you have two options: add a different card that supports automatic recharges, or keep recharging your wallet manually so you're there to complete the 3DS step each time.

3

Walking through a real 3DS checkout

Here's an example of what the flow can look like. When 3DS kicks in, Reloadly connects to your bank, which opens its own authentication page right inside the checkout:

CANCEL
BANK

Purchase Authentication

Please enter the One Time Password OTP sent to your registered XXXXXX1741. You are paying merchant RELOADLY INC. the amount of €15.00.

CONFIRM
RESEND
CANCEL

The page will automatically time out after 420 seconds.

At the same time, your bank sends the one-time password (OTP) to your phone by SMS:

Bank · Messages · now

Please use the OTP code: 227017 to complete your transaction.

COPY "227017" MARK AS READ

Check your phone (or whichever device your bank sends the OTP to), copy the code, paste it into the authentication page, and click Confirm to complete the purchase.

💡 Tip: the page times out after a few minutes (in this example, 420 seconds). If you don't have your OTP handy yet, use Resend instead of waiting too long and having to restart the recharge.

❓ Frequently asked questions

Why am I suddenly seeing a bank verification screen when I never did before?

We recently added 3DS to the card checkout flow as a security upgrade. Depending on your card issuer, this extra step may now appear when you recharge your wallet.

My auto-recharge stopped working — is 3DS the reason?

It's possible if your card falls under the "Require 3DS" category, since your bank may demand the interactive OTP step on every charge, including automatic ones. Try a different card, or switch to manual recharges.

Where does the OTP get sent?

That's determined entirely by your bank — usually SMS to your registered phone number or an email, depending on what you've set up with your card issuer.

What happens if the authentication page times out?

The recharge attempt is cancelled and no charge goes through. Just start the recharge again and complete the verification within the time window shown.
